8/20/2024 11:48:00 AM

Three retail theft criminals have received significant prison sentences in Platte County.

On August 19, Marvin Calhoun received a twenty-year sentence for first degree robbery and 10 years for armed criminal action when he stole Chiefs apparel from Dick's Sporting Goods in Zona Rosa.

On August 15, Asia Marshall was sentenced to seven years in prison for second degree robbery and 11 additional counts of stealing from various retail locations in Platte County.

Also on August 15, Aaliyah Walker received a six-year sentence related to 15 stealing offenses.

Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd said, "Retail theft continues to skyrocket across the United States, and it's becoming more dangerous all the time. These criminals need to know we will aggressively prosecute prolific or violent shoplifters in Platte County." On October 5, 2018, Calhoun robbed the Dick's Sporting Goods located at Zona Rosa. As he left the store with a basket of Kansas City Chiefs merchandise, a clerk intercepted him and asked if he needed help checking out. Calhoun pointed a black handgun at her and responded "Naw, I don't need help checking out." He then left the store. Calhoun had pleaded guilty to an attempted robbery and armed criminal action in Jackson County in 2009 and served time in prison for those offenses. While released on bond in the Platte County case, he allegedly stole from another retailer in Jackson County. After Calhoun pleaded guilty to his Platte County offenses, Judge Ann Hansbrough sentenced him to 20 years in prison for robbery and 10 years for armed criminal action, with those sentences running concurrently. He must serve 85% of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Marshall pleaded guilty to one second degree robbery and 11 other thefts committed between May 20 and December 21, 2023. She robbed the Bath and Body Works at Zona Rosa with another person. Marshall admitted that the other person repeatedly punched a clerk before items were stolen. Marshall committed four other stealing offenses from Bath and Body Works, three stealing offenses from the PINK store at Zona Rosa, two stealing offenses from the Sephora at Zona Rosa, and two stealing offenses from an ULTA Beauty Store in Platte County. The combined total of loss from all of her offenses in Platte County was more than $35,000. Judge Hansbrough sentenced Marshall to seven years for each offense, with all of the counts to run concurrently. It is her first prison sentence.

Walker pleaded guilty to 15 counts of stealing between March 20, 2021 and March 25, 2024. She stole seven times from Bath and Body Works, three times from Sunglasses Hut, three times from Rally House, and once each from Victoria's Secret and Sephora. The combined losses from those offenses was more than $30,000. Judge Hansbrough sentenced her to six years in prison on each offense, with those sentences running concurrently. It is Walker's first prison sentence.

Zahnd said, "These are tough but fair prison sentences. I applaud Judge Hansbrough for sentencing Marvin Calhoun to 20 years in prison after his defense attorney asked for the minimum sentence. We have to send a message to people intent on stealing from Platte County retailers: If you continue to steal or ever use a weapon, prison is your next destination."

The cases were prosecuted by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Jaclyn Taylor and First Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Mark Gibson.
